Who am I?
Hello! I am a person with too many hobbies and not enough time. I am married and have one child. My son is eight and is a very active, curious, imaginative, creative child. I love his curiosity and his creativity. I listen to him jabber with his figures and smile at the stories he tells. Perhaps he’ll be a writer one day too!
I teach 6th grade English and ESL. I am working on earning my Master in Information and Library Sciences in the hopes of one day becoming a school librarian.
I love to be creative. Growing up my mom taught me every craft under the sun, except quilting, which happened to be the one thing I wanted to learn more than anything. In college, I taught myself to quilt. Then I came home and taught my mom and my sister to quilt. I also enjoy painting and drawing, although I’m not very good at it.
What do I read?
I read quite a bit, but I wish I had time to read more so I could keep up with my kids. That is my school kids. I love fantasy, especially epic fantasy, the thicker, more epic the better. Some of my favorite authors are:
- Brandon Sanderson
- Terry Brooks
- Patrick Rothfuss
- Leigh Bardugo
- JK Rowling
- Ursula K LeGuin
- Robin Hobb
- Cixin Liu
- Nnedi Okorafor
- Yoon Ha Lee
- Mary Robinette Kowal
- Victoria Schwab (VE Schwab)
- Katherine Arden
- Laurie Halse Anderson
- Adam Gidwitz
- Rick Riordan
- AND many, many more!
I also happen to love YA and NA (New Adult) books, which is good since I need to be familiar with those books to do my job well. See My Philosophy page for more information on that topic.
What do I write?
I also write fantasy. I wrote about the beginning of my writing dream here. After I came home from college I created a world and wrote 130 pages of a novel. I fumbled around and knew I had a lot to learn, so I started reading books on how to write novels. From those books, I learned I had far more to learn than I ever imagined. I stopped writing for 10 years because I couldn’t begin to imagine how I could implement all I had learned all at once.
I stumbled onto the Writing Excuses podcast and listened to it for the last 8 years. Much of what I know about writing, I learned from that podcast. I can’t say enough good things about it. If you want to be a writer, listen to it. Season 10 is a great place to start because it is a master course on how to write a book from start to finish.
I finished my first fantasy novel manuscript rough draft in spring 2017. I wrote a short story and it earned an honorable mention in the Writers of the Future contest (International contest!!). It found a home on Youth Imagination here.
I’ve written several other short stories since then. Some have been meh. Some are not yet finished. One is pretty good. So I’m sending that one out to a magazine now. (July 2019)
Teaching all day, grading essays at night, writing my stories, spending time with my family, and grad school keeps me very busy.
I hope you like my blog. I absolutely LOVE hearing from you! I would love to hear any suggestion you have to give.
