I saw this anthology on Netgalley and hello…dragons…so I was all in! The release date on this book is July 7th 2020. As I read this book, I thought a lot about what I like and don’t like about short stories. This book contained a few that I didn’t care for and several that I loved. All were well written of course, but some stood out above the others. So I analyzed them and came up with 5 things I believe make a good short story. I’m sure these are not all the qualities of a good story though. You might like short stories for another reason. If so, let me know!
Characters Through the Ages (Well, through 70 Years)
I hope you are all well! This week has been madness! As you know I'm a 6th grade English teacher. My school was on spring break. It got extended this week, but teachers were required to work from home. Wednesday we started to get information. Thursday we began frantically redesigning our lesson to go online … Continue reading Characters Through the Ages (Well, through 70 Years)
Best Books of 2019
These are the best YA, Fantasy, and Science Fiction books I read during 2019.
Book Review: The Invisible Library
The Invisible Library does not have a fancy cover but it is simple and elegant and I am a sucker for any book that has the word "library" in it. So I had to pick it up! And I'm so glad I did! This is not a YA book but I loved it none-the-less. Book Review: Irene is a junior librarian for THE Library. This library exists on its own, outside all the countless alternate worlds. Irene travels to different alternates on assignment to collect certain unique copies of books..occasionally, by any means necessary. Sometimes this is an easy task, sometimes not. For this mission, she must go into an alternate that is infested by Chaos. To make matters more complicated she has been assigned an apprentice that is keeping something from her.
Book Review: The Dragon Warrior
Dragon is in the title so I HAD to pick this book up! This book releases on October 15th. I want to get the review up before then, so you get a bonus post this week! I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed reading this book! *This book was given to me … Continue reading Book Review: The Dragon Warrior
Book Review: The Natural History of Dragons
This has the word “Dragon” in it so of course I had to read it! I’ve heard some people say they hated it and some loved it. I’m in the loved it camp. It is not my typical read with tons of action, but I enjoyed it none the less.
Writing Advice: Write What You Know
“Write what you know.” I’ve heard this attributed to Mark Twain but I’m not sure if this is accurately attributed. If you know more about who first said this, I’d love to hear from you in the comments or email me! The librarian in my is very concerned with giving attribution to the correct people! Many people get frustrated by this piece of advice. I was one of them because I’m a fantasy/sci-fi writer. How can one know about a creature that doesn’t really exist…dragons, unicorns (although maybe they are real, but really good at hiding), and trolls (these do actually appear on the internet all the time, just not in the literal form that I write.) I have a friend that writes about an ICU nurse who turns into an amateur sleuth. As far as I know, she’s never investigated an ACTUAL murder, although she was an ICU nurse. You get the idea right?
1st Acceptance Letter!!! My Short Story is Getting Published!
I was sitting at the lunch table at work going through my personal email when I saw the words "Story Acceptance" in the subject line of an email!! My heart started pounding and my face flushed as I opened the email. Yes! It said my story had been accepted and they will be publishing it in the Youth Imaginations Magazine April edition!
